Mick Reynolds RIP

Mick Reynolds RIP

by Bill Coss (Tuam Herald)

The death has occurred of Mick Reynolds who starred at midfield for Galway during their three in-a-row era in the 1960s. He passed away in his native Manchester having previously lived and worked in Tuam for many years.

Mick became a legend of Galway football at Croke Park in 1964 when his magnificent kick from a high-pressure late ’50’ played a major role in defeating Meath in the All-Ireland semi-final and putting Galway on the road to three in-a-row glory. “Mick the Kick”, as he became affectionately known, was assured of everlasting fame.

From that hard-earned win, Galway soared to thrilling new heights in the final against Kerry, with Mick Garrett and Mick Reynolds a midfield partnership that brought power and stability to a crucial area, paving the way for a glorious victory.

It was the most memorable year in the sporting life of Mick, as he missed the 1965 All-Ireland final because of tonsilitis and was a panel member in the third winning year, 1966.

He played with Galway until 1967, the year they went to the USA after winning the National League. There, Mick played his final game in the maroon and white in Chicago, as captain for the occasion, an honour he would cherish.

Mick also enjoyed a magnificent career at club level, winning five County Senior Football Championship medals and three senior league medals with Tuam Stars during a hugely successful era for the north Galway club.
