As a mark of respect Galway GAA request that all clubs and grounds in Galway City and County fly flags at half-mast and that all teams observe a moment’s silence prior to all games, this weekend.

They needed to withstand a driving finish from Derry but Galway held on to reach their fourth All-Ireland Minor Football Championship final in seven seasons after a thrilling finale in Donnycarney.
Goals in either half from Jack Lonergan and Colm Costello placed a sizeable down payment on victory and with Costello and Éanna Monaghan, their standout forwards, kicking 1-8 between them, Alan Glynn’s side built a 2-9 to 1-5 lead by the 50th minute.
The Oak Leaf County lost wing-forward Johnny McGuckian following a second yellow card offence in the 57th minute but summoned a stirring fightback to kick the closing six points before coming up just short.
The Tribesmen never trailed over the hour and made a perfect start when clever approach work from Tomás Farthing was followed by a superb finish from Lonergan for a fourth minute goal.
Four of the next five points also belonged to the Connacht runners-up with Costello (two), Monaghan and Shay McGlinchey all on target.
Derry’s sole reply came courtesy of top scorer Ciarán Chambers and their chances received a major double boost before the break. First, Eoin Higgins blasted past Kyle Gilmore for a 29th minute goal and then Galway lost McGlinchey to a black card.
Rather than act as a turning point, Galway were galvanised and stretched their lead from 1-4 to 1-1 at the break to 2-5 to 1-1 despite operating with 14 men. Their crucial second goal came when Cillian Trayers found Costello and the Dunmore MacHales forward cut in from the left flank before finishing in fine style.
The excellent Ruairí Forbes, Chambers and Higgins were all on target for Derry but with Monaghan kicking back-to-back scores, Galway remained in control and held a seven-point lead on 50 minutes.
It was a day when Galway defenders came up with several magnificent goal-saving interventions, Vinny Gill in the second half following what Trayers had brilliantly managed in the first.
Derry refused to go away, though, and a storming finish delivered points from McGuckian, sub Conor Downey, Cahir Spiers and three further Chambers efforts. ‘Keeper Ben O’Connor also joined their attack to good effect and despite losing McGuckian, the 2020 champions kept pouring forward.
It was backs to the wall in the closing stages from a Galway perspective but they held out with Antain Donnelly’s last-gasp attempt at an equaliser tailing just wide.

Tipperary snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to edge past Galway in a thrilling All-Ireland Minor Hurling Semi-Final at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.
Despite forging six points clear at one stage of the second half, Tipp fell behind in the second minute of added time to a fifth Rory Burke point, as Galway looked to be timing their run perfectly.
However, Tipperary weren’t willing to throw in the towel with Adam Daly producing the levelling score before Joe Egan slotted over the lead point, with sub Senan Butler putting the seal on the win with a last ditch goal, all in ninety second spell deep in injury time.
It was a high-quality game, with the sides shooting four points each by the eighth minute, with the latest from Rory Burke following a save from Eoin Horgan. Tipp enjoyed the first purple patch with a four-point run with Conor Martin to the fore.
Galway responded and hit Tipp for a two-goal blast in the 20th minute, with Rory Burke provider in both goals for Aaron Niland and Conor Dolphin. Burke was a real thorn in the Tipperary side with four first half points from play.
However, Tipperary responded well and struck for a goal on 25 minutes with Adam Daly finishing from close range, but Galway enjoyed the better of the play coming up to half time and Niland free gave them a slender 2-11 to 1-13 advantage at the break.
It was Tipperary who took control in the third quarter with Tom Delaney and Paddy McCormack becoming more prominent in attack shooting ten points from play between them, and when Joe Egan goaled in the 43rd minute, it put them in a strong position.
However, they became a little tentative and Galway took full advantage with rising star Aaron Niland top scoring with 2-11, his second goal on 58 minutes setting up a grandstand finish.
It looked as if they were going to snatch victory when Rory Burke scored his fifth from play but as they had done in the Munster Final, Tipperary had other ideas and set-up a final showdown with Offaly in two weeks time.

Galway will face Limerick in the All-Ireland SHC semi-finals after they held off Cork at FBD Semple Stadium in Saturday’s quarter-final.
A pair of first-half goals ensured that the Tribesmen led throughout this game, giving them a fifth straight championship victory over the Rebels. The Munster side will reflect on the concession of those green flags as well as wastefulness at the other end, especially in the first half. Down by five points at half-time, they came back to within one on more than one occasion but an equaliser remained elusive.
The game wasn’t even a half-minute old when Galway corner-back Jack Grealish put them in front as his long ball wasn’t cleanly claimed by Cork goalkeeper Patrick Collins and ended up in the net. Cork almost replied immediately but Éanna Murphy saved from Alan Connolly and the goalkeeper was to make two more important saves in the first period, denying Robbie O’Flynn and Darragh Fitzibbon.
Though Cork did get up and running as Conor Lehane’s free cut the gap to a point, 1-1 to 0-3, Galway’s Conor Cooney replied with a free and then they had a goal as Conor Whelan beat Seán O’Donoghue to a Tom Monaghan delivery and produced a superb low finish across Collins and into the net.
Cork responded well to that and when Robbie O’Flynn landed a fine point on 27, it was 2-3 to 0-6 but Galway had scores from Whelan, David Burke and Joseph Cooney to give them a cushion again.
Shane Kingston’s free for Cork left five in it at the break and then, four minutes into the second half, the same player made it a two-point game when he seized possession as Galway came out of defence and kept his composure to finish well.
However, Henry Shefflin’s side weren’t knocked out of their stride and cancelled out the goal with points from Burke, Conor Cooney and an outrageous Whelan effort. Much of the half was like that as Cork would make a burst to come within touching distance only for Galway – with Joseph Cooney excelling after moving to centre-back – to push on again.
A Cathal Mannion point, awarded by Hawkeye just after a Mark Coleman sideline cut had been similarly adjudicated, made it 2-13 to 1-12, but Cork sub Patrick Horgan had two in a row before O’Flynn got his third. It left a point in it again but once more Galway tacked on a trio, through sub Johnny Coen, Monaghan and Joseph Cooney.
Horgan and another Cork sub, Alan Cadogan – who finished with three points – cut the deficit again but Cathal Mannion popped up with two big points to give him four and Conor Cooney made it 2-19 to 1-18 with 66 minutes on the clock.
Galway wouldn’t score again, but they would survive without needing to. They face Limerick in Croke Park on Sunday, July 3.

Following the completion of the four provincial football championships last weekend, representatives of defending All-Ireland champions Tyrone and the four 2022 provincial champions Kerry, Dublin, Galway and Derry were in Croke Park as the race for the Sam Maguire hots up in the weeks ahead.
In attendance were Michael McKernan (Tyrone), Paudie Clifford (Kerry), Niall Scully (Dublin), Shane Walsh (Galway) and Chrissy McKaigue (Derry).
Next weekend sees the first round of the qualifiers. Holders Tyrone must travel to take on their Ulster rivals Armagh, Cork host Louth, Monaghan travel to Mayo and Clare host Meath in four eagerly awaited ties involving teams eager for their shot at qualifier redemption.
The second round is scheduled for the following weekend and the quarter-finals will take place on the weekend of June 25/26.
In keeping with recent seasons, the two semi-finals will take place on back-to-back days at Croke Park on the weekend of July 9/10 with the Tailteann Cup final also scheduled for Saturday July 9.
The quarter-finals will be an open draw subject to avoidance of repeat pairings. This year’s semi-final draw pairs Connacht with Ulster and Leinster with Munster – or the teams that beat the provincial champions at the quarter-final stage.
GAA Director General Tom Ryan said: “2022 has already been an exciting year for Gaelic football and by extension the GAA with exciting provincial championships.
“Similarly, the inaugural Tailteann Cup is underway and has already provided counties with competitive games against teams of a similar standard on a pathway to Croke Park and a possible route back into the Sam Maguire championship next year.
“Tyrone’s run to the All-Ireland title last year captivated us all and they are the team to topple this year.
“I wish all of our players enjoyment and success in the weeks ahead – not least those here with us today – and I especially hope that our members and supporters look forward to returning in even larger numbers this year for the concluding stages of our championships.
