Galway will face Limerick in the All-Ireland SHC semi-finals after they held off Cork at FBD Semple Stadium in Saturday’s quarter-final.

A pair of first-half goals ensured that the Tribesmen led throughout this game, giving them a fifth straight championship victory over the Rebels. The Munster side will reflect on the concession of those green flags as well as wastefulness at the other end, especially in the first half. Down by five points at half-time, they came back to within one on more than one occasion but an equaliser remained elusive.

The game wasn’t even a half-minute old when Galway corner-back Jack Grealish put them in front as his long ball wasn’t cleanly claimed by Cork goalkeeper Patrick Collins and ended up in the net. Cork almost replied immediately but Éanna Murphy saved from Alan Connolly and the goalkeeper was to make two more important saves in the first period, denying Robbie O’Flynn and Darragh Fitzibbon.

Though Cork did get up and running as Conor Lehane’s free cut the gap to a point, 1-1 to 0-3, Galway’s Conor Cooney replied with a free and then they had a goal as Conor Whelan beat Seán O’Donoghue to a Tom Monaghan delivery and produced a superb low finish across Collins and into the net.

Cork responded well to that and when Robbie O’Flynn landed a fine point on 27, it was 2-3 to 0-6 but Galway had scores from Whelan, David Burke and Joseph Cooney to give them a cushion again.

Shane Kingston’s free for Cork left five in it at the break and then, four minutes into the second half, the same player made it a two-point game when he seized possession as Galway came out of defence and kept his composure to finish well.

However, Henry Shefflin’s side weren’t knocked out of their stride and cancelled out the goal with points from Burke, Conor Cooney and an outrageous Whelan effort. Much of the half was like that as Cork would make a burst to come within touching distance only for Galway – with Joseph Cooney excelling after moving to centre-back – to push on again.

A Cathal Mannion point, awarded by Hawkeye just after a Mark Coleman sideline cut had been similarly adjudicated, made it 2-13 to 1-12, but Cork sub Patrick Horgan had two in a row before O’Flynn got his third. It left a point in it again but once more Galway tacked on a trio, through sub Johnny Coen, Monaghan and Joseph Cooney.

Horgan and another Cork sub, Alan Cadogan – who finished with three points – cut the deficit again but Cathal Mannion popped up with two big points to give him four and Conor Cooney made it 2-19 to 1-18 with 66 minutes on the clock.

Galway wouldn’t score again, but they would survive without needing to. They face Limerick in Croke Park on Sunday, July 3.

2022 GAA Football All-Ireland Series launched

Following the completion of the four provincial football championships last weekend, representatives of defending All-Ireland champions Tyrone and the four 2022 provincial champions Kerry, Dublin, Galway and Derry were in Croke Park as the race for the Sam Maguire hots up in the weeks ahead.

In attendance were Michael McKernan (Tyrone), Paudie Clifford (Kerry), Niall Scully (Dublin), Shane Walsh (Galway) and Chrissy McKaigue (Derry).

Next weekend sees the first round of the qualifiers. Holders Tyrone must travel to take on their Ulster rivals Armagh, Cork host Louth, Monaghan travel to Mayo and Clare host Meath in four eagerly awaited ties involving teams eager for their shot at qualifier redemption.

The second round is scheduled for the following weekend and the quarter-finals will take place on the weekend of June 25/26.

In keeping with recent seasons, the two semi-finals will take place on back-to-back days at Croke Park on the weekend of July 9/10 with the Tailteann Cup final also scheduled for Saturday July 9.

The quarter-finals will be an open draw subject to avoidance of repeat pairings. This year’s semi-final draw pairs Connacht with Ulster and Leinster with Munster – or the teams that beat the provincial champions at the quarter-final stage.

GAA Director General Tom Ryan said: “2022 has already been an exciting year for Gaelic football and by extension the GAA with exciting provincial championships.

“Similarly, the inaugural Tailteann Cup is underway and has already provided counties with competitive games against teams of a similar standard on a pathway to Croke Park and a possible route back into the Sam Maguire championship next year.

“Tyrone’s run to the All-Ireland title last year captivated us all and they are the team to topple this year.

“I wish all of our players enjoyment and success in the weeks ahead – not least those here with us today – and I especially hope that our members and supporters look forward to returning in even larger numbers this year for the concluding stages of our championships.

This was an utterly satisfying afternoon in Salthill for Galway.

Roscommon brought hope, expectation, and a significant support Corribside, but Galway were convincing winners.

There was plenty to enthuse about Galway’s performance.

John Daly’s shrewd defensive display and the attacking punch provided by Shane Walsh, Damien Comer, and Rob Finnerty ensured Padraic Joyce’s impressive Galway returned to the western summit.

A couple of late Roscommon goals narrowed the gap, but this day belonged to a promising maroon and white team.

Roscommon weren’t efficient enough in the opening period as Galway eventually went in 2-7 to 0-8 ahead at the interval.

That was chiefly due to two goals – a flash of Shane Walsh class and smooth opportunism from Patrick Kelly.

It was a lively encounter from the outset, but Galway made a crucial burst midway through the half yielding 1-3 without reply.

By that stage Ros led 0-4 to 0-3 before Cillian McDaid poked over a delightful equalising point.

Then the influential Damien Comer, Rob Finnerty, and Johnny Heaney were involved crafting an 18th minute chance for Walsh, who illustrated his ability with a splendid goal.

Further points from Kieran Molloy and Finnerty followed as Galway edged 1-6 to 0-4 in front.

As the interval approached and with Molloy black carded for a foul on Ciaráin Murtagh, Galway still managed to net a second major in the 34th minute.

Finnerty’s initial attempt struck the post and Kelly, a renowned goalscorer for Mountbellew-Moylough, pounced to blast a tonic second goal that moved Galway 2-7 to 0-7 clear.

Ultan Harney, who was industrious throughout, replied with a point for Roscommon, but Galway still departed armed with a five point cushion at the turnaround.

Early efforts from Heaney and Comer, who won a turnover deep in his own half, before adding the grace note with a 39th minute point.

Another Galway burst when Comer, Finnerty, and Walsh raised white flags put the locals 2-15 to 0-12 ahead with 15 minutes remaining.

Despite being under duress Roscommon did stay defiant with Conor Daly palming a 63rd minute goal.

Substitute Diarmuid Murtagh added a second goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but by then sufficient Galwegian damage had been inflicted.

Galway defeat Laois in All-Ireland Minor Hurling quarter-final

Aaron Niland helped himself to 0-12 as Galway booked their place in the All Ireland minor hurling championship semi-finals thanks to a hard-earned win over Laois in O’Moore Park.

Galway had been comfortable winners over beaten Munster finalists Clare last weekend with Niland hitting 0-16.

And he was their chief scorer once again as they had just that bit much for a spirited home side coming off the back of a Leinster final loss to Offaly two weeks ago.

In a three-team round robin format, Laois will now face Clare in Ennis next Saturday with the winners going forward to join Galway, Tipperary and Offaly in the All Ireland semi-finals.

The game began with two Aaron Niland points either side of a Jack Breen score before it burst into life.

Laois almost had the ball in the net in the third minute when Ben Deegan’s shot was blocked down and came to Jer Quinlan who unleashed a thunderbolt that was saved by Donagh Fahy.

Ben Deegan pointed the resulting 65 but from the next puck-out, Eoghan Murphy won it and found Quinlan again who this time beat Fahy from close range.

Laois were rampant now and Jack Breen set up Cormac Byrne for another goal chance but again Fahy denied him with Deegan once again pointing the 65.

Conor Dolphin and Niland responded with points for Galway but a Ben Deegan free from in front of the terrace left Laois 1-4 to 0-5 ahead at the midpoint of the half.

However, Galway grabbed the next three scores via Paddy McCarthy, Conor Lawless and Niland to retake the lead but Laois were level after 20 minutes thanks to Deegan.

Deegan and Niland traded frees again before Cullen Killeen regained the advantage for Galway as we entered the final five minutes of the half.

Deegan and Thomas Brennan scored for Laois before half time but so too did Rory Burke and Cullen Killeen to take 0-12 to 1-8 lead at half time.

Paddy McCarthy and Jer Quinlan swapped points when play resumed before Niland struck his seventh of the game to give Galway a two-point lead in the 37th minute.

Laois then had a good spell but failed to capitalise and hit two poor wides before Niland landed two frees to leave it 0-16 to 1-9 as we entered the final 15 minutes.

But Laois refused to give up and Jer Quinlan scored two points – the second after a super run from sub Mark Downey to bring them back into the game.

Niland took his tally to 11 with another brace as Deegan responded with a free to leave it 0-18 to 1-12 with 50 minutes on the clock.

Galway looked to pull away then with a flurry of scores but as we entered four minutes of injury time, the gap was back to three.

Eoghan Cuddy and Thomas Brennan combined to set up Mark Downey to rattle the net for a second time.

Laois had two late chances to snatch a draw but Bobby Murphy’s effort was blocked out for a 65 and another chance was also thwarted as Galway held on.

Message from Galway GAA

On behalf of Galway GAA and the Pearse Stadium Committee we welcome all GAA Supporters to Salthill on Sunday next, the 29th of May for the Connacht Senior Football Championship Final  between Galway and Roscommon, which will throw-in at 1.45pm.

This game on Sunday will result in increased traffic in the Galway, Salthill and Pearse Stadium areas and we urge all Supporters to arrive early, in order to avoid traffic congestion and potential delays entering the Stadium.

This is an all-ticket game and no tickets will be available to purchase at the ground on the day.Tickets can be purchased on line and in Centra and SuperValu Supermarkets in advance of the game.  Please have your tickets available for scanning as you approach the Stadium. Turnstiles will be open on all sides of the ground.

There are ample Car Parks in Galway City and Salthill and we encourage patrons to use these car parks and walk or take public transport to/from Salthill.

**The Gardai will be operating a traffic cordon in the vicinity of the Stadium and access will only be for Residents and holders of Car Passes.

Car Parking will be available at St. Endas Secondary School on Threadneedle Road and also at Coláiste Muire Máthair (St. Mary College), on St. Marys Road.

Finally, we appeal to all Supporters to be conscious, mindful and respectful to the needs of our neighbours and local residents.
